What is Noetic Science?

Dan Brown's book, The Lost Symbol not only mentions noetic science, Dr. Katherine Solomon is this books female protagonist, with noetic sciences figuring prominently throughout.

Noetic Science was mentioned in The New York Times book review of the book:

"The Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) refers to noetic sciences as “explorations into the nature and potentials of consciousness using multiple ways of knowing—including intuition, feeling, reason, and the senses. Noetic Sciences explore the ‘inner cosmos’ of the mind (consciousness, soul, spirit) and how it relates to the ‘outer cosmos’ of the physical world."

There are several ways we experience the world around us. The physical sciences focus on our external observations and are grounded in objective evaluation, measurement, and experimentation. This is how it becomes useful in increasing objectivity and reducing bias and inaccuracy in the way we interpret those things we observe.

As athletes and poker players there are times when we experience another way of knowing that is purely subjective or internal. Some may call it intuition or simply a ‘gut feeling’ or hunch. For example, as a football safety, without an identifiable external clue, you ‘know’ the wide receiver is going to run a post pattern ad you are one step ahead of them yo make the interception. It is the same way as a poker player, without a noticeable tell, you have a ‘feeling your hand is beaten. It is often the combination of the time you have been playing, your experiences or some unknown factor that cannot be explained or proven, but to you it feels absolutely real nonetheless. It is this way of knowing for no known reason is what we term noetic. The noetic sciences focus on bringing a scientific lens to the study of subjective experience, and to ways that consciousness may influence the physical world. The essential hypothesis underlying the noetic sciences is that consciousness matters.

Psychologist William James, stated the study of noetic science can provide "states of insight into depths of truth unplumbed by the discursive intellect. They are illuminations, revelations, full of significance and importance, all inarticulate though they remain; and as a rule they carry with them a curious sense of authority..."

Though there are good aspects in much of what IONS purports, Noetic Coaching does not follow their doctrine. We do believe in the power that is possible with the connection between the brain and the mind. We also feel that the unconscious mind is what controls our mental mindsets. Though mental mindsets may sound like an abstract concept, they have a real and identifiable impact on our performance in our day to day lives.

Dr. Katherine Solomon specializes in noetic science, with its focus on mind-body connections. She admits that her field is not widely known. But when her story comes out, she suggests, noetics could get the kind of public relations bump that Mr. Brown gave to the Holy Grail.
